The Physical Exam Essentials application published by Hipposoft lists a comprehensive guide to complete a systematic exam of a patient. The app includes hints for disease signs and symptoms for each organ system, definitions to aid in notation, and pictures of physical findings and demonstrations of how to perform special maneuvers, such as the fluid wave for the abdomen. This program costs $2.99, but is well worth it for reviewing techniques not often performed. Click here to buy Physical Exam from iTunes.

Most medical professionals are familiar with the Sanford Guide, a pocket handbook containing tables of bacterial sensitivities and resistance to drugs. While this app costs twice that of the handbook ($30 vs. $15) this is much easier to use and read. This app allows searches by organism (H. pylori, Eikenella, Neisseria, Staph, etc.) or disease by organ system (lungspneumonia, genitalPID, footpuncture wounds). Also contains protocols for special disease states, such as sickle-cell anemia, HIV & Hepatitis exposures, and surgical prophylaxis. Descriptions are comprehensive and include side effects and dosing for adults, pediatrics, and renal/hepatic adjustments. Price is well worth the amount of information and ease of navigation.
